In a bizarre event, people of Kolkata reported of witnessing a rainbow halo ring around the sun around 12 in the noon. As the reports of the strange event spread like a fire, people started clicking pictures soon and shared them on the social media.
According to experts, a blue and red ring named ’22 degree circular halo’ was spotted around the Sun between 12.10pm and 12.40pm. The event usually occurs when rays coming from both the Sun and the Moon get refracted through the hexagonal ice crystals present in the cirrus clouds. Refraction of light leads to formation of colorful ring.
When white light passes through ice crystals present in the clouds it gets refracted into seven colors, a phenomenon which leads to the formation of rainbow in the rainy season. It is the same phenomenon which formed the colorful circular ring around the Sun.
“Halos around the sun or moon happen when high, thin cirrus clouds are drifting high above your head. Tiny ice crystals in Earth’s atmosphere cause the halos. They do this by refracting and reflecting the light,” says expert. “It’s a very common phenomenon in the cold countries. But in our countries it’s occurrence is rare and cannot be predicted… The red and blue ring around the sun was seen for around 30 minutes.”
Last 22-degree halo was observed two years back in April 2013.
Youtube Science and Technology has recorded the event in its camera and uploaded it on its YouTube channel.
