UK willing to support Odisha on climate change and economic development

UK is willing to join hands with Odisha in the field of climate change and economic development. UK will aid and provide technical expertise to curb the carbon emission and protect climate in the region.

Protecting climate is one of the most important task and we are ready to give technical assistance, said Desmond Swayne, UK minister of state for international development on the sidelines of the inauguration of ‘UK In Odisha Campaign’ organised by the British Deputy High Commission. He further added that Odisha has been one of the first state in the country to have Climate change action plan and UK will support the state economically to create job opportunities that will eradicate poverty from the state.

While further strengthening 3-decade long partnership with the state, Swayne said that Odisha has registered 8.7 percent growth rate in 2014-15 and poverty in the state has declined by 24.6 percent. He praised the Odisha government and said the govt. is making remarkable effort to eradicate poverty and develop the state by creating job opportunities.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said, “While the present campaign will strengthen our existing partnership, it will explore new possibilities for alliance in other sectors also. I am happy to note that at present, there are six ongoing programs supported by the UK government with a total commitment of more than 150 million pound. The current programs involve strengthening in governance and administration and improving the urban infrastructure facilities in the state.”

British Deputy High Commissioner, Scott Furssedonn-Wood said, “We want to be a partner for the state as it builds that future. We want more talented young people from Odisha to study at the UK’s world-class universities. We want more British companies and I have brought 10 British companies with me this week to bring their world-class products and services to Odisha. We want to share more UK ideas and expertise as Odisha rises to the challenges of urbanization and of climate change.”
