An Indian origin scientist has revealed that Type-2 diabetes might be delayed or prevented with the regular use of turmeric coupled with omega-3 fat. Turmeric which has found its usage in many age-old remedies apart from being a good spice that is vividly used in Indian food, now can be used to protect humans against one of the most common disease in the world.
Being a systemic inflammation, type 2 diabetes affects insulin secretion and its functions said Professor Manohar Garg from the University of Newcastle’s Nutraceuticals. The researchers wanted to stop the inflammation in the bud and for this they took two bioactive compound — curcumin and omega-3 fats easily found in food. Both the compounds are well known anti-inflammatory agents. Curcumin, derived from turmeric, is part of the ginger family and commonly used for food colouration.
Researchers found that earlier people did extensive use of turmeric in their food. However, now people have started following western diets that have resulted in significant decline in the consumption of curcumin (turmeric) in food. Due to this new trend number of people suffering from type 2 diabetes in India have grown exponentially. Researchers warned that the diabetes is an epidemic in India and will soon become the number one burden for the country if nothing is done to prevent the disease now.
The effect of turmeric will be tested in randomised trial. Garg explained that all the volunteers will be divided into four groups. Group one will get curcumin only, group two will be given omega-3 fat only, group three will get both the compounds while group four will serve as a control group. The capsules contain 200 milligrammes of curcumin and one gramme of omega-3 fat respectively.
To be eligible for the study, a volunteer should be aged between 30 and 70 and should be prone to diabetes due to impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose.
Garg believes that the compound is safe and has no side effects and can be used to treat diabetes. Moreover, the effectiveness of the drug will be proved after clinical trials. If the treatment is successful then it might save millions of people which are suffering from the disease and are moving towards slow death.
