country in grip of swine flu

Country is in the grip of swine flu again, by infecting 12,963 and killing 774 people, the deadly seasonal virus has become one of the biggest causes of worry for the Indian government. Although the government has initiated several preventive measures including free supply of diagnostic kits in worst hit states like Rajasthan and Gujarat but still, the death rate hasn’t declined.

According to official sources, 2015 is the worst hit year with 774 deaths, 75 deaths more than the previous worst, two years back. However, the sources said that the government has been able to significantly slash the infected person to death ratio this year as 5,253 people were diagnosed with H1N1 infection in 2013 while 12,963 people got infected with the disease this year. Government claims that due to their active efforts they have been able to control the situation, or else situation could have been even worse.

Rajasthan and Gujarat are among the worst hit states with nearly 200 deaths each. When asked by the citizens of the states, they accused government of underplaying the outbreak and requested private hospitals to cooperate more actively that would also save time, money and most importantly someone’s life.

People fear that swine flu isn’t curable; however, doctors stated that H1N1 virus hasn’t evolved since in was found back in 2009 and an anti-viral drug named Oseltamivir is efficient and shortens the severity of the illness.  Doctors suggested people to wear N95 mask in crowded places as the virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Government organisations are offering free N95 mask  in several states and encouraging people to use it by running educational programs and advertisements.

A government official said that most of the deaths have been due to late diagnosis of the disease and time ran out before the could be cured, thus he requested people to get tested soon after symptoms like fever, runny nose, sore throat or congestion. Moreover, he said that there is no need to panic since swine flu is a seasonal virus that makes it no more contagious or deadly than other seasonal flu viruses.
