Eating fish oil can help in losing wieght. According to study authors, people invest a lot in weight reduction pill, however, fish oil can prove to be a more efficient alternative.

If yes, then there might a better solution — Fish Oil that reduce weight in a more efficient manner.  According to researchers, fish oil metabolises fat by activating receptors in the digestive tract and triggering the sympathetic nervous system that enables obese people in their 30s and 40s to lose weight at a much faster rate.

Study authors explained that fat tissues do not store all of the fat and some fat is stored in the white cells to maintain energy supply while “brown” cells metabolise fat to maintain a stable body temperature. The number of brown cells are highest in babies and significantly decreases as we grow into adulthood.

However, there is also a third type of fat cell called beige cells which researchers have discovered recently in mice and in humans as well. Beige cells also have brown cell-like functionality and its number count decreases as we age and  without these metabolising cells, fat continues accumulating for decades without ever being used. “We knew from previous research that fish oil has tremendous health benefits, including the prevention of fat accumulation. We tested whether fish oil and an increase in beige cells could be related,” said senior author Teruo Kawada.

For the study, researchers created two groups of mice — the first group was fed with fatty foods while the second group was given fatty foods with fish oil additives. After few weeks, researchers noted that mice that ate food with fish oil gained five-10 percent less weight and 15-25 percent less fat compared to those that did not consume the oil. The team also found that beige cells formed from white fat cells when the sympathetic nervous system was activated, meaning that certain fat storage cells acquired the ability to metabolise.

“People have long said that food from Japan and the Mediterranean contribute to longevity, but why these cuisines are beneficial was up for debate. Now we have better insight into why that may be,” explained Kawada in a paper which appeared in the journal Scientific Reports.
