Scientists warn of Megadrought in US

Scientists have warned that US south-west states might face megadrought this year. Previous year was warmest in the history of California. However, experts say that following the trends an unprecedented drought might hit the USA this century.

Researchers from NASA and Columbia and Cornell University collaboratively analysed the climatic conditions of US including south-west states and central plains and found that southwestern states are witnessing an increment in average temperature with every passing year. Thus, towards the end of the century they might suffer from ‘megadrought’.

“Nearly every year is going to be dry toward the end of the 21st century, compared with what we think of as normal conditions now,” said Ben Cook from Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the lead author of the study. “We’re going to have to think about a much drier future in western North America.”

Such a long dry condition will affect the agriculture in the country which will be followed by an enormous rise in food prices. Researchers believe that the upcoming calamity will affect nearly 60 million people from San Diego to Antonio and from Oakland to Omaha, who heavily depend on water. Scientists claimed it as a slow motion natural disaster.

According to the study, there are 80 percent chances that the megadrought will hit in next 35 years that can be delayed if aggressive efforts are taken to fight against the calamity. Research took account on carbon emission in the country and found it to be one of the prime reason for the upcoming drought.

Moreover, in past century people in US have suffered drought that lasted for a decade. People still remember the droughts in 1930’s and 50’s and overcame but what is coming in the future is a monster, a megadrought that would last for 20 years at least.
