Romaine lettuce infected with fatal bacteria through dirty irrigation canals

The United States government recently revealed that several fields of the romaine lettuce have been spoiled by the E. coli bacteria that were carried by infected irrigation canals. According to the recent reports, the E. coli disease has already killed 5 people as well as sickened near about two hundred ten people in around thirty-six states of the United States. This has reportedly become the biggest breakout of the E. coli bacteria disease over the past ten years.

The officials stated that the E. coli bacteria’s outburst was discovered in one irrigation canal situated in the Yuma region. Investigations are still going on in order to find out as to how the E. coli bacteria landed up inside the irrigation canal and if there happened any contamination in the other canals. The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the outburst happened weeks ago, nevertheless, investigations would take months.

The Commissioner of the United States Food and Drug Administration, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, said in a statement, “More work needs to be done to determine just how and why this strain of E. coli O157: H7 could have gotten into this body of water and how that led to contamination of romaine lettuce from multiple farms.”

The CDC and FDA warned people to prevent consumption of the romaine lettuce until they were confident that it was not cultivated in the Yuma region.

The CDC said in a statement, “Some people who became sick did not report eating romaine lettuce, but had close contact with someone else who got sick from eating romaine lettuce.”

Most of the E. coli bacteria prove to be harmless. However, the E. coli O157: H7 could result in serious disease involving stomach cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and a kind of kidney breakdown known as “hemolytic uremic syndrome.”

The E. coli bacteria survive within the animals’ digestive tracks. The bacteria could possibly get into the meat at the slaughterhouses as well as could get inside the soil through water and could affect crops from the manure used as fertilizer.

It has been estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the foodborne diseases generally affects around 47.8 million individuals in the United States per year, killing around three thousand of them and putting around 127,000 of them into hospitals.
