Is changing diapers of bedridden of elderly patients on timely basis troubling you? Here’s a sigh of relief as researchers have designed a sensor that will notify caretakers by SMS to change the wet diaper. Hence, cutting down the overhead of checking the wetness of diaper before changing it.
Researchers from the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) at The Agency for Science, Technology and Research in Singapore (A*STAR) have developed an “intelligent continence management system” made of three entities — a thin sensor that is disposable, a very small and compact wireless transmitter, a receiver and a software that will track the wetness level and will notify caretaker.
Lead researcher Jackie Ying said that wet diapers are very unhygienic and aren’t good for health as they can cause several diseases including skin rashes and infection. Thus changing diapers on timely basis is always a good habit. However, frequently changing diapers needs frequent checking for its wetness level which further adds to extra workload on the caretaker. To overcome the extra workload researchers have developed intelligent continence management system that works autonomously and will notify of changing diapers.
To use the newly developed sensor, there is no need to buy any special diaper. Te sensor easily integrates itself on the diapers available in the market. The sensor appears like a thin strip made of metal, plastic and paper that is inexpensive and easily can be disposed after use. In addition, the wireless transmitter can be removed and reused. Transmitter is connected to sensor and sends the notification to the caretaker to change the diaper.
While explaining the working of the device, Ying said that the device basically keeps a check on the wetness level of the diaper. Once the wetness surpasses a threshold value it sends a notification through a transmitter to the caretaker. The notification can be sent through various method including a call or message which depends on the caretaker.
According to its developer, the device is very crucial for patients who are unable to communicate or have lost speaking ability or wetness sensation.
