President Obama praises Indian-origin kid at White House, Watch Video

Barack Obama, US President gave a shout out to 15-year-old Indian-American kid who became the first person on the planet to feature two times in Global Finalist in Google Science Fair. While praising, Obama said that Pranav Sivakumar is an extraordinary kid who will do great things in life ahead and what he does is unique and no one can think of doing such things at his age.

While addressing the crowd at ‘Astronomy Night’ in the White House where Pranav was also present, President Obama said that at the age of six, the boy found an encyclopedia about famous scientists lying around the house which ignited the interest and curiosity towards outer space in him. Since, then Pranav’s father took him to an astrophysics lab for ‘Ask-A-Scientist’ one hour class every Saturday morning. It was at the lab where he met researchers and teamed up with them to study the ‘gravitational lensing of quasars’.

Comparing Pranav’s achievement to his own childhood, Obama said that he never thought of such things at such a small age, this child is extraordinary. He further added that being global finalist in the Google Science Fair twice is itself an extraordinary achievement which suggests that this boy will do some important discovery in future. Since, only 20 students make up in the global final list, President Obama requested the crowd for a big round of applause for the 15-year-old kid who currently is in eighth grade at the Illinois Math and Science Academy in Aurora, Illinois.

While summoning to parents present in the White House, Obama said that parents should leave encyclopedias in their house so that small children read them which will drive interest towards science and research. Who knows we can get another Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton very soon or even better scientists, engineer, inventor or astronaut.

Of 20 global finalist students, seven are from America while Pranav surpassed 10 students in his age category to appear in the final list of this year’s Google Science Fair. Pranav identified 109 new high probability quasar candidates with the help of study on the unresolved configuration of quasars in the Solan Digital Sky Survey. Quasars are believed to be powered by accretion of material into supermassive black holes in the nuclei of distant galaxies, making these luminous versions of the general class of objects known as active galaxies.

Pranav has won many awards previously including Astronomical League’s National Young Astronomer Award and two National Semifinalist awards in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology. He also was runner-up in the Spell Bee competition in 2013.

While commenting on the shout out, Pranav said that he will continue his research on the dark matter and dark energy which make up 95 percent of the universe. He wants to help the people in developing a better understanding towards the universe.
