One of the uprising smartphone making companies, OnePlus has responded to the Type-C discussion that their OnePlus Type-C cable and the OnePlus USB Type-C adapter could cause harm to the power sources of the third-party devices due to the use of 10kΩ resistor instead of a 56kΩ used in v1.1 of the USB Type-C standard. However, the firm insisted that both of the accessories are compatible with OnePlus 2 smartphone.
Earlier this month, a Google developer has revealed that the OnePlus Type-C accessories are safe to be used with the devices from the company itself, he however, warned that by using these cables or adapters with Google Chromebook Pixel, Nexus 6P, and Nexus 5X may damage the power source – charger, power bank, USB hub.
Explaining in detail, Carl Pei said in a blog post, Our cable and adapter use a 10kΩ resistor, but according to version 1.1 of the Type-C port standard, these products should be using a 56kΩ resistor. The issue is that the cable and adapter are designed for a maximum of 2 amps of power, but the resistor will allow fast-charging devices to try to draw more power than a power source may allow.”
“This could result in damage to the power source (third-party charger, USB port, etc.) if the device and power source do not have an internal mechanism to self-regulate the amount of power flowing to or from them. Typically, if a charger has a CE, UL or CCC logo on it, it has been certified and is safe to use,” he further added.
For an instance, if a 3A device is charged with a 3A self-regulated source, it won’t charge the device much fast, but it remains safe to use. While, charging a 3A device with unregulated 3A power source could be unsafe to use for fear of damaging the power source.
The company requests the customers who have bought the accessories to be used with handsets other than OnePlus2 smartphone, they should apply for a refund procedure. It further added that the users from India and China can visit their nearest service center and ask for a refund process to be initiated. While. buyers from North America and Europe can visit a refund page and fill in the details process the refund via PayPal. Note, the company will only provide refunds up until December 31.
OnePlus promises that it will address the issue with the upcoming revisions of its charging accessories to meet v1.1 USB Type-C specification with a 56kΩ resistor.
