Nextbit Chief Designer Scott Croyle at the ongoing CES 2016 tradeshow announced that all the Nextbit Robin smartphone will start shipping on February 16. Specifically, for the first 1,000 pre-orders, the shipment will be received on the same day, while the remaining backers will get them around the end of February.
Croyle further added that the smartphone given to backers will be GSM-based version only. The CDMA version of the handset will arrive later this year. The pre-orders can be made until January 15. The cloud-based smartphone went on pre-order in many regions including India in October last year. The handset, which starts at $399 (roughly Rs. 26,000), will cost users another $70 (roughly Rs. 4,600) to get it shipped to India.
The ‘Cloud-Fist’ smartphone comes with a 32 GB of inbuilt storage with external storage support. However, it offers 100 GB of cloud storage, which allows users to upload data up to 100 GB on its cloud service and download whenever required, without any hassle. The magic of the phone lies in its smart feature, which automatically uploads lesser-used media files such as videos and photos to the cloud. Additionally, if a consumer crosses the 100 GB cloud storage limit, the company will extend the storage for free!
With an impressive set of features, the phone is a worthy competitor in Rs 30K to Rs 40K price segment. As it is priced at $399 but reaching India, it would cost around Rs. 30,000 including shipping charges and other customs. It is up for pre-orders on its official website in Mint and Midnight color variants.
For the project, the company had received crowd funding from Kickstarter for financial support and expected to get an amount up to $500,000 (~Rs. 3.26 crores). However, it had received an overwhelming response and collected $1,362,344 (~Rs. 8.9 crores) in funding.
On specs front, the handset features a fingerprint sensor and dual front facing speakers. While, the latest USB type – C support makes a way for new generation connectivity and data transfer. Thus, the phone has a lot to offer and it is a worthy contender in the range.
The Next Robin is fronted with a 5.2-inch full-HD display with 1080×1920 pixels of resolution, packed in a funky plastic body, along with a 5-megbitapixel of secondary camera. Meanwhile, the back panel features a 13-megapixel primary image capturing solution. Out-of-the-box, it will be running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, which is supported by a Qualcomm’s hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor coupled with 3GB of RAM. It is fueled with a 2680mAh of battery.
Nextbit claims that Robin is completely carrier and bootloader unlocked, which allows the users to flash their own custom ROMs.
Nextbit was founded by two ex-Google employees and its team consists of veterans from Apple Inc. and HTC.
