On Monday, Gilles Muller of Luxembourg got a victory in his first match against last year’s runner-up France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin in opening the round of the Aircel Chennai Open. He struck 29 aces and defeated his opponent by 6-7 (11), 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Eight Seeded Muller wrapped his win in 2 hours 23 minutes, and he spared all three break points in the third set. His opponent said on his defeat, “It has obviously not been a good start to the year for me. Last year I reached the final, but this time I’m out in the first round. I guess you’ve to take the good with the bad.” He further added that he was not been able to capitalize chances and mistakes done by Muller. He admitted that Muller gave him many opportunities especially in the third set, but Muller played his game exceptionally better than me.
Muller was happy after getting win in the match and said that it was tough for me, and he did not want to lose his first game of this year and he was glad to win this interesting match. He added that he was not able to show his aggressiveness in the first set, however, he put all his energy and efforts in next two sets. He made some mistakes but overall he sorted out his mistakes. It is crucial for him to find ways to get points as he was not able to rally with his opponents from the baseline. He said, “Edouard is a great returner. I had to mix it up. I sliced, employed the kick serve, hit some flat. I had to give him different balls to play.”
