NASA SDO captures stunning images of one of the largest Solar Flares in recent times

National Aeronautics and Space Administration  (NASA) Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) that constantly gazes at the Sun has captured one of the largest solar flares that occurred in recent times. As per the NASA scientists, the sun emitted two mid-level solar flares on September 7 and two major solar flares on the morning on September 6, 2017.

While explaining scientists revealed that first flare was at its peak at 6:15 am EDT on Sept 7. While the second flare which was also the larger on peaked at around 10:36 am EDT. The first flare is classified as an M7.3 flare. The second as X1.3. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc. M-class flares are a tenth the size of X-class flares.

Also, the morning of Sept 6 witnessed some major flares. First one was at its peak at around 5:10 a.m. EDT while the second flare which was also the larger one peaked at 8:02 a.m. EDT. The first flare is classified as an X2.2 flare and the second is an X9.3 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had forecasted about the corona discharge and its effects on Earth. Interested people can visit NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center at http://spaceweather.gov, the U.S. government’s official source for space weather forecasts, alerts, watches and warnings. It was due to solar flares that people were able to enjoy the dazzling show of northern lights on nights of Sept 6 and Sept 7.

Moreover, NASA’s SDO constantly gazes at the Sun and was able to capture some beautiful shots of the solar events on both days. Scientists explained that solar flares are very powerful radiation emitted by Sun which might create disturb human life on Earth. Although these flares cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere but some powerful flares have the capacity disrupt communication signals, GPS, and several more such activities.
