Obesity has always been a major problem in America. But in last few decades, it has spread to different parts of the world, and today no country can be found without obesity problem. Obesity was always considered as a deadly problem. But recent researches have shown that children of obese parents are facing a delay in development.
Recently published in the Journals of Paediatrics, “parental obesity is not only causing health issues in their children but have also shown some traced of delay in development in their motor skills”. In the United States of America, 60% women during pregnancy reach a body mass index of 30, while the normal is up to 24.9.
However, not only the obese mother is responsible for her child’s underdevelopment, the father is equally responsible too. In a certain research by National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which was conducted on 4821 obese parents’ children, it was found that the children were suffered significantly under development symptoms. The children tested, were between the age of 4 months to 3 years, during 2008 to 2010. The results found cannot be avoided.
Effect of parental obesity negatively affected their children’s social activities, memory, respiratory dynamics and brain development. In a comparison with children of normal body mass Index parents, it was found that these children of obese parents response slower to social and emotional activities than the other type. The children born to extremely obese parents even failed to solve the easiest mathematical problem.
To keep a check on the obese rate, the upstate KIDS study in NYC, is conducting research camps regularly for 6000 obese parental children. The parents are asked to regularly report to the research team with a complete age and stage questionnaire about their children’s development. Though the research is helping children to over =come the development delays, still the progress is yet to upgrade.
