Switching off smartphone an hour before sleep can prevent sleep disorders

NIMHANs, the premier institution for mental health, Neuroscience and allied studies has set forth a study that invariably brings out the setback one causes to one’s sleep pattern and overall circadian rhythm. As a result using the internet for Facebook, Whatsapp and other social media platforms.

This clinical study conducted by the Service for Healthy Use of Technology at the NIMHANS, Bangalore has found that people who use the various social media platforms such as Facebook Whatsapp, Instagram, etc. can lead people to delay their bedtime by as much as 1.5 hours.

Even though the ill-effects of usage of the social media platform was known to some extent previously, but this particular study presents a concrete case citing the same. The study was made public on the occasion of World Sleep day which is observed on 17th March every year. The effects of the aberration in one’s sleep pattern could be detrimental to one’s overall health in the long run. The exposure to the social media platforms that people use for a variety of reasons these days starting from work to communicating with other members of the community can pose a threat to the sleep pattern of individuals. The clinical study has been published in the January edition of Indian Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and it claims that the quality of sleep that a person gets these days is hugely affected by his or her inclination to use the smartphones, laptops and other handheld devices before hitting the sack.

Over the years, people suffering from various sleep disorders has risen and is predicted to worsen in future. Several causes have been enumerated for the same such as quality of lifestyle stress levels, use of various electronic gadgets, nutrition and body weight, etc.

As per a research was done previously by a Gurgaon-based private hospital, it was observed that about 90 percent of the cardiac arrest cases in the younger segment of the patients also complained of reduced sleep or errant sleep cycles. The link between sleep cycle and cardiac health has been found profoundly via this study.
