Microsoft has recently released free versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices. The free edition of Word is currently on 2nd position in most downloaded free apps, that too merely within 24 hours of releasing on Apple Store.

In this latest free version Word, users can freely create and do basic editing in documents, and this is made possible by dropping the mandatory subscription to Office 365. Thus, for more advanced editing features, an Office 365 subscription is required.

Keeping in mind the smaller screen for the iPhones, the iPhone version of the apps also provides users with the Reflow option, which is a different viewing mode. Reflow makes documents fit better on the iPhone’s smaller screen to make it easier for users to find where they need to make any changes on the document.

Earlier, the only office app available was Office for iPhone, which was a single app that allowed users to connect with their OneDrive. However, to create documents, an Office 365 subscription was required for the users.

Not only the Word app, but the Excel and PowerPoint tools also gained much popularity upon launch. These allow the users to do the basic editing to the spreadsheets and presentations on the go. However, again, to do the advanced editing, Office 365 subscription would be required.

According to Microsoft, the iPhone app offers the same experience as the iPad version. It is optimized for Apple smartphones. There’s Dropbox support as well, which allows to open, edit and save the document directly from the cloud.

The Redmond giant has also updated its Office suite for the iPad and revealed the touch-optimized version for its upcoming Windows 10 OS. It also announced the Office for Android tablet Preview and said that general availability is expected in early 2015.
