The image and video sharing app, Instagram owned by Facebook, is now offering a new layout to its users and attracting few more advertisers. The firm has switched from its signature square-shaped format for images and videos sharing. Now it lets the users shoot in landscape mode as well!

A report from Reuters suggests that the change has been done by Instagram to stop users defecting to more flexible services like Snapchat. Also, it is further reported that it is the first major alteration to be seen to the photo-sharing, social media service since Facebook Inc bought it for $1 billion in 2012.

In a blog post, Instagram said that every fifth photo uploaded to the servers do not fit the square format.

“It boils down to giving advertisers and users more options,” said Debra Aho Williamson, a social media marketing and advertising Instagram Screenshot - The TeCakeanalyst. “You want people to be able to see more of your ad. It’s something advertisers are definitely going to be interested in.”

The company has updated its systems and app, so from Thursday, the web-based and the Android or iOS app users can now post images in both portrait nad landscape mode, which broadens the option range for advertisers and 300 million users, both.
The move made by the company would help in its war with the new rival, Snapchat and in the meantime it will help in increasing revenue. Instagram has expected to  generate about $600 million in advertising revenue by the end of this year and $2.8 billion in 2017, according to projections from research firm eMarketer.

On Thursday, the firm has used the landscape option to show Walt Disney Co released exclusive footage of its upcoming film, “Star Wars, The Force Awakens,” to promote the new formats.

About Instagram

Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them on a variety of social networking platforms, such as Facebook,Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. Previously, the portrait format was a distinctive feature, as it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodak Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used by mobile device cameras. Users can also apply digital filters to their images.

The maximum duration for Instagram videos is 15 seconds.

Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in October 2010 as a free mobile app. The service rapidly gained popularity, with over 100 million active users as of April 2012 and over 300 million as of December 2014. Instagram is distributed through the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Windows Phone Store. Support for the app is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android handsets, while third-party Instagram apps are available for Blackberry 10 and Nokia-Symbian Devices.

The service was acquired by Facebook in April 2012 for approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock. In 2013, Instagram grew by 23%, while Facebook, as the parent company, only grew by 3%.
