Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka deploys new performance enhancing techniques

Vishal Sikka took over as a full-time director of the board and Infosys CEO and MD on 1st August 2014 and ever since his focus has clearly been the employees – from encouraging creative thinking to easing internal affairs.

He gifted 3,000 Apple iPhone 6 handsets to over 3,000 top-performing employees as a demonstration of his appreciation towards the hardworking employees of the company.

The gift was sent out along with a mail from Sikka, which stated, “Thinking back on 2014 feels good, doesn’t it? There was so much you wanted to accomplish with seemingly so little time to do it all. Now, as you stand on the brink of the New Year and look back, there is the satisfying realization that a great part of it actually got done.”

This Infosys staff was taken over by this gesture of admiration. One of the employees said that they have not been yielded in this manner before. The employees received no formal notice or information for this, and did not possess any knowledge of who the high performers were because the company’s CRR’s (consolidated relative ranking) was not revealed to them.

The company, which has over 1.65 Lakh employees, has been taking a number of initiatives to promote better performance environment through quarterly promotions, conversion of variable pay to fixed pay, involvement of employees in decision-making and various other activities.

Sikka’s initiative to prepare employees on areas like out-of-the-box thinking might be a step in the right direction but the opacity in the managerial management needs to be eliminated and to train employees at the lower end of the pyramid to use the knowledge they have gained appropriately.

We hope that his methods do pan out to be in the better interests of the employees. After all, who doesn’t love a surprise iPhone 6 on their desk to kick start their year?
