The well-known South Korean automobile creator Hyundai is allegedly occupied with the production works of a new petrol engine for a next car rumoured to be the new Santro hatchback that could be making a comeback to the Indian market. Codenamed AH2, many industry watchers believe is the new model, was caught on camera recently, indicating that its arrival won’t be too late.
The latest information has emerged about Hyundai’s upcoming hatchback that will be slotted between the Eon and Grand i10. It is highly likely that Hyundai will present it at the next 2018 Indian Auto Expo. A report also shared an image of 4-cylinder petrol engine said to have been taken at the Hyundai engine assembly plant, reveals that the production of the new mill has commenced. Further, it adds the test mule of the Santro spotted before could have been powered by the same engine. The latest image of the engine also hints at the new 4-cylinder engine of the Santro. The rest of the specifications of the engine is not known now.
The new compact car from Hyundai may also have Automated Manual Transmission technology. Hyundai officials have not disclosed the exact name of this hatchback although there is a significant chance of the Santro badge making a return to the Indian market. The reason behind this is that the Santro is already a well-known name in India. The Santro and Santro Xing both were the best sellers for Hyundai in the Indian market, right from the market introduction of the first Santro in 1999. The latest car is expected to offer a petrol engine with manual and AMT options.
The car is supposed to challenge the Renault Kwid 1.0 and the Tata Tiago. Since Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program will go live from next year. It will employ the newly-developed motor instead of being borrowing the powertrain from the Eon, as speculated earlier.
