Breakthrough in the seed production of Indian pompano in a mass scale

The regional center of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute  (ICAR) has made a big breakthrough by conducting seed production at a mass scale of Indian pompano for the very first time in the history of the world.

Trachinotus mookalee, aka  Indian pompano is a breed of marine fish which belongs to the family of Carangide. It scores low in the landing of the wild. It has a high content of 6 fatty acids and Omega 3. It is available in the domestic market at the rate of 200 per 300 kgs.

This species of fish is set for distribution in the regions especially in the Indo- West Pacific areas and is available in around  15 countries in the continent of Asia. It is available from the east coast to the west in India.

It has extensive and sporadic occurrences in lagoons and bays, and the fishes in the adult stages prefer to breed in the shallow waters of the coast, mostly in the rocky areas.

Senior scientist, Subhadeep Ghosh, who is in charge of the regional center, reported to The Hindu that the species is a good candidate for aquaculture as it has fast rate of growth and is easily adapted to the conditions of the culture. The species also has fast acceptance for the artificial feed,  good quality of meat, high preference of the consumers and pleasant appearance. Moreover, the culture can be successfully operated in the ponds, cages, and tanks.

Broodstock collection

In order to create more diversity in the mariculture of India, seed production and breeding of the species was started with the broodstock collection at the center of the region in the year  2011.

The initial success in the production of the seeds was conducted on a smaller scale in the initial part of  2014.
