Beautiful view of Earth captured by NASA’s Mars Orbiter

Is Moon much darker than the Earth? What if both are displayed at equal brightness Moon won’t be visible at all? NASA’s Mars Orbiter is the most powerful Telescope which has recently captured a stunning view of Earth and the Moon. It shows the details of the continent-size on the planet and also the relative size of its natural satellite.

The image that was captured by Mar’s Orbiter combines two separate exposures that were taken on November 20, 2016. The image was taken by a High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The images were taken to standardize HiRISE data analysis since the reflectance angle of the moon’s Earth-facing side is well known before. For further arrangement of presentation, the revelations were processed individually to optimise every tiny detail visible on both Earth and the moon.

The image reveals that the moon is much darker than Earth. It would barely be visible if both are shown at the same brightness scale as Earth. The combined view of the image preserves the accurate positions and sizes of the two celestial bodies which are comparatively relative to each other.

The distance between Earth and the moon is about 30 times the diameter of Earth.

Earth and the moon appear much closer than they actually are in the image. The observation was planned for a certain period of time, at which the moon was almost directly behind Earth, from Mars’ point of view, to see the Earth-facing side of the moon.

In the image that was captured, a reddish feature was seen near the middle of the face of Earth, which is Continent Australia. When the constituent images were taken further for studies, it was found out that Mars is about 205 million kilometers away from the Earth. With the help of HiRISE and five other instruments, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been investigating Mars since 2006.

This rare image of Earth taken from the Mars Orbiter is processed to study further to find out more details about the outlook of the Earth and its positioning details with other planets.
