Uber, one of the most controversial taxi service in India last year, was ordered to halt its services in South Carolina. On Thursday, the transportation company (which also delivers kittens, ice cream, and human food), reported that The Public Service Commission of South Carolina ordered to halt its operations in the state due to improper licensing of the drivers.
A legal notice was sent to Rasier LLC, subsidiary of Uber, saying that the company’s driver do not have adequate credentials and rights for them to become an individual who can pick up commuters and take them to places for money.
“All motor carriers transporting persons or property for compensation to first obtain a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity before commencing operation,” the filing states, adding that the idea itself is not entirely terrible. “Consumers benefit from, and deserve choices in, the marketplace. However, those choices must be consistent with state law intended to protect the public.”
The UberX service by Uber has been operating in the state, since July last year. According to the reports, local regulators have been looking forward to setting up a new classification scheme for the services such as Uber. However, the process was halted when Uber surprised the officials with a filing to have its taxis and limousines to operate like any other cab in the state.
“Despite working closely with the PSC for the past several months on a permanent solution for Uber in South Carolina, today’s actions are unexpected and not reflective of the progress made thus far,” an Uber spokesperson said in a statement. “We have challenged the order and remain committed to providing South Carolinians with greater opportunity and choice.”
Previously, the similar looking problem was seen with the company in Portland, Oregon where the services were launched without the approval from the local government. The government issued a lawsuit along with steep fines against both the company and its drivers. Ultimately, the cab service was paused by the corporation with a promise to the users to regain it in next three months.
