Most commonly known as ‘homepage of Internet’, Reddit has been blocked by the Turkish government under the country’s Internet censorship law 5651, which states that the Turkey government is allowed to ban sites that contain pirated content, pornographic content or is critical of the first President Mustafa Ataturk.
In a statement, the Telecom Authority of Turkey (TIB) reveals that the access to Reddit will be blocked from Friday night and further said, “After technical analysis and legal consideration based on the Law Nr. 5651, ADMINISTRATION MEASURE has been taken for this website (reddit.com) according to Decision Nr. 490.05.01.2015.-252804 dated 13/11/2015 of the Presidency of Telecommunication and Communication.”
The Turkey’s Internet censorship law 5651 was proposed in 2007 and since then it has been being misused to ban several genuine sites like Twitter and YouTube. However, the ban were lately overturned by the courts but there were no logic or reasoning given as to why certain sites are banned.
In the case of banning Reddit across the country, the NSFW threads present at the website could be possibly a reason, but authorities haven’t revealed it yet, publically. Many users online reported that the ban seems to be on the DNS level and can be circumvented. by using a foreign DNS service such as the Google Public DNS.Tags: Ban, internet, reddit, Turkey
