Microsoft is on new mission of suing companies for falsely claiming that they are affiliated to Microsoft’s technical support. Lawsuit is also filled against an India based company. According Redmond Giant these companies were tricking users by claiming to be from Microsoft to get access to their machine and steal precious information.
“In its first big strike against technical support scamming companies, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU) filed a civil lawsuit in federal court in the central district of California against Omnitech Support and related entities for unfair and deceptive business practices and trademark infringement,” a Microsoft spokesperson said on Tuesday.
Case is also filed against against C-Cubed Solutions Private Limited, an Indian based company that runs a mail server through which “fraudulent technical support businesses communicate with customers”.
According to the filed suit, every year nearly 3.3 million Americans become victim of fraudulent technical support causing an estimated loss of $1.5 billion. On the scam, senior Microsoft attorney Courtney Gregoire wrote in a company blog, “These scammers claim to find non-existent computer viruses and infections then con people out of their hard-earned money for bogus tech support, in addition to stealing personal and financial information or even installing new malicious software.” Since May, the tech giant has received more than 65,000 complaints of fraud, she added.
A Microsoft official said the main reason for these large number of fraud cases is that these companies create an impression of being an association with Micrsoft, to which people fall easily and give access to their private information.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advised consumers, “If you get a call from someone who claims to be a tech support person, hang up and call the company yourself on a phone number you know to be genuine. A caller who creates a sense of urgency or uses high-pressure tactics is probably a scam artist.”Tags: fraud, lawsuit, Microsoft, technical support
