Defending Champion Stanislas Wawrinka qualified for semi-finals of men’s singles by defeating Gilles Muller at the ATP Chennai Open tennis tournament on Friday. Wawrinka, a two-time champion and top seed here, got the victory in an hour and 25 minutes to beat eighth seed Muller of Luxembourg by 6-2. 7-6 very easily on the main court of the SDAT Tennis Stadium.
In other matches, Slovenian’s Aljaz Bedene defeated the fifth seed Gullermo Garcia Lopez by 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 and also qualified for semis. Chinese Taipei’s Yen Hsun Lu lost his match by 6-7, 4-6 against third seed Roberto Bautista Agut. David Goffin prevailed over Andreas Haider-Maurer by 7-5, 6-2 to get into semis and faces Wawrinka in semis. In other semifinal, Bautista will face Bedene on Saturday of Chennai open which will also a good match to be seen.
Wawrinka said after winning over his opponent that his opponent put a pressure on him in the second set otherwise he played aggressively in the match against a good player. Next match will also be tight against Goffin as Goffin played extremely well in the last season. So he has to work hard and make new strategies against him to get into finals.
In doubles, Indo-South African had face little difficulty against Spaniards 6-3, 6-3 on the main court of the SDAT Tennis Stadium but in the end, they qualified for the semi-final. Paes-Klaasen now has focus on his next match against Purav Raja-Adil Shamasdin and Yen-Hsun Lu-Jonathan Murray to played on Saturday and want to be eligible for Final.
Paes already got this title six times with Mahesh Bhupathi (2011, 2002, 1999, 1998, 1997) and Janko Tipsarevic (2012). Paes said at the post-match on court that he never worried about numbers and main motive is to give his hundred percent in the game for his country.
