India scored runs as if they were hungry for years against Sri Lanka in 4th ODI at Eden Garden, Calcutta with the history created by such a class player Rohit Sharma. India set target of 405 runs in front of their opponent in which Rohit Sharma scored more than 50% runs to take India at a position where every Indian could have smell the victory. India won this match by a vast difference of 153 runs. After Rohit Sharma had brightened the Eden with a glittering double ton, second of his ODI career, the Indian bowlers provided an early breakthrough and heap Sri Lanka before 50 overs similarly they did in last three ODIs.

Rohit Sharma, who was injured and was not available for India from last ten weeks,  was awarded as Man of the Match for his tremendous form after recovering from injury. He also got a cheque of Rs. 264,000 from Bengal’s Cricket Association for his magnificent knock of 264 in 173 balls.

India won the toss and selected to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane opened for India and got scoreboard moving consistently. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu did not put too many runs on the scoreboard and got out before 60 runs on the scoreboard in 13th overs. Indian Skipper Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both scored runs continuously by showing his patience to stand on the ground. They both made partnership of 202 runs and took India in a good position till 39th overs. Suresh Raina, who came after unfortunate dismissal of Indian skipper in 39th over had chance to show his ability to score runs in death overs, but he did not keep his composure and got out in scoring runs quickly. Robin Uthappa after comeback to the side also proved his patience and stood on the pitch with Rohit Sharma till end to get score board moving. Robin Uthappa did not score runs quickly as he is usually known for, but made a hundred run partnership with Rohit Sharma. They put India in a situation that made it difficult for Sri Lanka. They put 404 runs on the scoreboard by losing five wickets in 50 over game. Rohit Sharma created history by scoring a record 264 runs in just 171 balls. While scoring the pile of runs, he became the first man in the history of cricket to score two double century knocks. Though his inning was marked by a black spot when he was dropped on four by Thisara Perera at third man. However, He did not disappoint skipper Virat Kohli and lived up to their expectation.

Sri Lankan Players Kushal Janith Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan opened for their team to chase the massive target of 405 runs. However, Sri Lankan could not show their temperament and threw their wickets regularly. They lost their four key wickets on score of 48 and kept themselves in pressure in the whole game. Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne showed their temperament and tried to chase this big total. However, after getting partnership of 118 runs Akshar Patel provided breakthrough for India in 29th over. After that, Indian Bowlers sent all Sri Lankan Players to the pavilion till 44th over. Sri Lanka was not able to play even 50 overs in front of India’s bowling. Dhawan Kulkarni bowled well for India and took four key wickets in his spell of ten overs giving only 34 runs. Umesh Yadav, Stuart Binny and Akshar Patel took two wickets each and kept Sri Lankan side in stress in whole innings. Sri Lanka only scored 251 runs and got defeated by India with a huge margin of 153 runs.

Virat Kohli delighted with their team’s performance and said in the post-match ceremony, “As I said in a press conference yesterday, once he gets going he (Rohit) is such a good player. I am very happy for him. A world record – scoring two double hundreds – and I feel that this record will not be broken. I just kept telling Rohit to keep going on and bat through. Once he gets 60, 70, it will be difficult to stop him. I will tell my kids that I was there. I am quite happy as of now. I have had more wins than losses now. Right now, the guys have responded well to what I want from them. The character will be tested in bad times. This Indian team must be remembered as a team that is ruthless. Hopefully, the guys continue to execute that in Ranchi.”

Angelo Mathews embarrassed by their team’s effort and gave reasons to their big defeat by saying this, “it is embarrassing that we are not even competing with India. We lost our way in the last 20 overs, they scored around 200 and that is not acceptable. The bowlers did not have any answers to them. Nothing can be taken away from the way Rohit batted. He was brilliant. Our fielding was terrible again. We need to fix our problems and fix it soon. We need to get our batting, fielding and bowling combinations right.”

Rohit Sharma after getting Man of the Match for his great knock expressed his feeling in the post-match ceremony, “The fact that I went on to bat 50 overs was absolutely pleasing. I have been working on to bat as long as possible. I am glad that the team won. That was actually my mistake (referring to the Kohli run-out). I accept that and no hard feelings. But, I did not want to lose focus after that. To lose him (Kohli) at that point was frustrating. I just kept talking to myself after I went past 100. I got to 100, converted it to 150, 200 and then 250 as I told you. It is difficult to pick one shot. All the 33 boundaries and 9 sixes I scored were good. I will try my best to get there (when enquired about the 300-mark). As of now, I will take 264. This is a special place for me. Lots of memories and this one is very special.”
