Hockey Champions Trophy' 14

Hockey Champions Trophy is back after two years. This time it will be hosted by a nation whose national game itself is Hockey, India. The second most prestigious Hockey Tournament will start from December 6, 2014 and will entertain people till December 14, 2014 in Kalinga Stadium, Bhuvaneshwar.

“We know there are distractions everywhere in every process. At this level, we only have to look forward to the Champions Trophy, and make sure we prepare ourselves as well as possible,” Roelant Oltmans, coach for the Champions Trophy said. “The boys are training hard, eager to learn and open to suggestions, and I am sure when the Champions Trophy starts they will be ready. I need all the energy in me to make sure the team is going to perform well.”

After blood-drenched trails, following eight teams qualified for this tournament: –

  • Pakistan (Pool A)
  • Belgium (Pool A)
  • Argentina (Pool B)
  • England (Pool A)
  • Germany (Pool B)

Eighteen member Indian Hockey Team squad led by centre-half Sardar Singh (200 caps) has been announced for the tournament on Monday by Hockey India (HI). Hockey India selectors Harbinder Singh, Arjun Halappa, R.P. Singh, high performance director Roelant Oltmans, scientific advisor Matthew Eyles and coach Jude Felix decided to choose 18-member team after the trials on November 18, 2014 at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Star goalkeeper with 115 caps P.R. Sreejesh was selected as Sardar’s deputy for the eight-nation champion’s trophy.

While being confident experienced director Roelant Oltmans, one in the selector’s team said that their team is in sublime touch and have shown superb form in previous tournaments. Their team showed remarkable performance after winning gold in 2014 Asian Incheon games and Test series in Australia. He gave his assurance for the team’s selection and said that the chosen team has the right combination and will provide a tough time to their antagonists participated in this tournament.

India will start their campaign against Olympic champion Germany on December 6, 2014 just after the clash of age-old rivals Argentina and Netherlands. The team is training under the direction of Oltmans in place of chief coach Terry Walsh (as his tenure ended).
