Haryana’s Ashish Jakhar made a national youth record in boy’s hammer throw in the 12th National Youth Athletics Championships on Friday. Ashish threw the 5kg ball and made a national youth record with a distance of 71.92m on his first throw. After that in the second throw, he improved his distance and chain to 72.04m to mark his class with fine rotations on the circle to make the first national record of the event.
The previous national record set by the Haryana’s Sukhdev Singh, who threw the ball to a distance of 70.35m in 2009. Only a Chinese thrower, Xu Wenjie has a better score than Ashish in the Asian rankings who hurled the ball to a distance of 72.35m.
Meanwhile, Bandana Patel won the gold in the girls 5000m race walk event by defeating Priyanka Patel, who had grabbed the gold in the youth category of the Junior Nationals in Vijaywada last year. Miraj Ali, who belongs to Uttar Pradesh, won the silver medal with a 68.35m throw in the meet.
Bandana took 26 minutes 36.15 seconds to finish the race and showed her skills to move ahead from all her opponents. Kerela girl G Nisha also surpassed Priyanka in the last 200 m and completed the race in 26:41:53 for the silver metal.
