With an aim of bringing fresh legs and giving chance to young talented spinners in Karnataka, Indian Spinner Anil Kumble’s TENVIC (a business of sports training and consulting) on November 28, 2014 declared the launch of the Spin Star’s Contest by Anil Kumble in which all boys and girls living in Karnataka between the ages of 10 and 19 can participate. This also applies to those boys and girls who are already engaged in representative cricket.
Selection trials will start in early January 2015 across three centres Bangalore, Hubli and Mangalore. 25 players from each of these centres will be listed for finals. Those shortlisted players will give their final performance in Bangalore on January 17 and 18. 20 players will be selected for training camp to be held for a week which will be supervised by the Former Indian Skipper Kumble, and players will get cricket kits for training by the organization of Kumble. The top three spinners will get Rs 1 lakh scholarship each from the trials.
Kumble said, “We are not assuring the kids that we will ensure their selection and promise them to play cricket. The main motive behind this is to give a chance to young spinners to express themselves. If we get more than 25 players talented then we will get them to the finals as well. We did not set numbers in stone that we have to select only 25 players from each centre.” He further added “this contest will provide a platform and help us to experience what quality spinners there is in the state, and how we can tackle them.”
Kumble announced that the registration process is going on by both ways online and at selected places like Café Coffee Day. He revealed that some 200 participants already got a date for trials. The process of getting registered is free of charge and will end on December 15, 2014. Online registrations can be done at anilkumblesspinstars.com. Kumble, India’s highest wicket taker with 619 wickets said, “When the players come for the qualifiers, we will look for skill of course, that is a given. However, we will also size up attitudes and the style of bowling. We will not restrict our focus to conventional spinners – after all, I myself was an unconventional spinner.” Kumble detailed, “The top three will have access to not just coaching but also mentoring, how to adjust to success and failure, how to cope with non-selection, things like that.”
