The American Space agency NASA has revealed spectacular images of a planetary nebula captured by its Hubble Telescope that has been orbiting Earth since last 25 years. The stunning image shows bright and vibrantly colorful cloud made up of gas and dust giving it Opal gem-like appearance.
Scientists named the planetary nebula as NGC 6818. Also known as the Little Gem Nebula, it is located nearly 6,000 light-years from our Earth in the constellation of Sagittarius.
In the image, one can see a Little Gem Nebula as a nearly spherical ball made up of two layers — first layer is outer region that is spherical and brighter while the second layer is in the interior and appears like a vase-shaped bubble.
Gem Nebula is nearly half million light years wide which is very small when compared to our galaxy Milky Way, although it is million times larger than our Earth. Scientists also call Gem Nebula as tiny nebula due to its small size.
According to NASA scientists, the bright color of NGC 6818 is due to powerful stellar winds coming from its host star. While explaining researchers said that the particles colliding with gasses in Nebula emit energy in the form of light giving it bright color and gem-like appearance.
Previously Hubble had captured the Gem Nebula back in 1997, at that time it was emitting ionized oxygen and hydrogen.
Moreover, Nebula is an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other ionized gasses. Nebula is a name for any diffuse astronomical object, including galaxies beyond the Milky Way.Tags: galaxy, gem, gemstone, hubble, NASA, space, telescope
