American Space Agency NASA has released a stunning image of fractured filled crater on the north pole of Mars. What’s astonishing about the crater is the lacy web of bright frost-filled fractures that is a delight to watch from the sky.
The high-resolution image was captured by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera equipped on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) back on 20 September in the year 2015. In addition, the image was acquired from a distance of 196 miles (314 km).
It was reported that the crater is nearly 5 km in diameter which is filled with countless polygon shaped structures similar to when drought strikes our Earth. According to scientists, those structures on the crater are the result of freeze and thaw for nearly million times that has resulted in fracture-like structures.
These structures are also seen on Earth, however, the new image has striking clarity and vividity. The size of fractured polygons on craters are smaller near the periphery while their size increases as we move towards the centre. In addition, pieces are more rectangular towards the rim while they are more circular towards the centre. ” A closer look shows some of these central polygons, which have smaller polygons within them, and smaller polygons within those smaller polygons, which makes for a natural fractal!” said the HiRISE team.
Moreover, the MRO spacecraft that has acquired the stunning image was launched back in 12 Aug 2005 and reached the red planet in March 2006. Since then the probe has been sending some breathtaking images.
