Everyone at least once in a lifetime farts that smells so bad in the public, but have you every ever wondered why your fart is sometimes less smelly and sometimes it has an eye-watery pungent smell that is unbearable and makes you ashamed of yourself?
According to a new study, researchers have found exact reason behind such eye-watering pungent in your fart and they believe that they can even reduce the strength of the smell.
Scientists blame your diet for different types of smell in your farts. While conducting experiments, researchers found that some types of food cause pungent smell while lead to less smelly farts.
Farts are a mix of 59 percent nitrogen, 21 percent hydrogen, 9 percent carbon dioxide, 7 percent methane, and 4 percent oxygen that occurs for a variety of reasons, ranging from swallowed air to chemical reactions in the intestines.
Now, researchers from the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, found that a product named Cysteine which is mainly found in dairy products, meat and eggs is the prime reason behind the pungent farts.
For the study, scientists mixed faeces with foods with different nutritional components and checked the intensity of smell each time and what component actually contributed to that eye-watering smell.
It was found that cysteine increases the concentration of hydrogen sulphide gas by seven folds in the stomach after the food is processed which results in the smelly fart.
Cysteine (also known as Cys or C) is a semi-essential proteinogenic amino acid. The thiol side chain in cysteine often participates in enzymatic reactions, as a nucleophile. The thiol is susceptible to oxidization to give the disulfide derivative cystine, which serves an important structural role in many proteins. It is used as a food additive in many cases. One can assume it as serine with one oxygen atom replaced with sulfur.
“This explains why bodybuilders who consume lots of protein powder are known to have smelly farts,” says Chu Yao, one of the authors of the study.
Study authors further revealed they have also found a way to reduce the amount of hydrogen sulphide by at least 75 percent. People can eat starchy foods like 5 percent. If you want to avoid getting smelly farts, here’s what you need to eat: potatoes, bananas, legumes, cereals, artichokes, asparagus, and fructans, to reduce the intensity of smell in your farts.
While explaining, study authors said that eating starchy food forces stomach to break down starch first and the focus is shifted from protein which reduces the production of hydrogen sulphide eventually. Lower production of hydrogen sulphide eventually lowers intensity of pungent smell in your fart.
So, better check your diet before going for an official meet and don’t consume too much dairy products or meat and don’t forget to add starchy food in your diet; Failure can lead to an awkward situation where everyone around you will be forced to close their breath for a while.
The study was presented at a Gastroenterological Society of Australia conference in Adelaide.
