To avoid accidents in the night due to faulty road lights, a team of scientists succeeded in inventing light-emitting cement to make roads, which absorbs solar energy during the day and emits it in form of light at night. The team claims that their cement could be luminous for hundreds of years.
As of now, the cement is available in green or blue color, and the light intensity could be regulated to avoid dazzling drivers.
Jose Carlos Rubio, from Michoacan’s University of San Nicolas Hidalgo (UMSNH) in Mexico, said, “The main issue was that cement is an opaque body that doesn’t allow light yo pass to its interior.”
When water is added to the ordinary cement, it dissolves like an effervescent pill, as it is a dust, Rubio explained.
“In that moment it starts to become a gel, similar to the one used for hair styling, but much stronger and resistant; at the same time, some crystal flakes are formed, these are unwanted sub-products in hardened cement,” he further added.
For the same reasons, researchers are now focused on improving the microstructure of the cement in order to eliminate crystals, which leads the formation of a complete gel. This gel will help in absorbing the solar energy that could be later emitted as light.
The researchers revealed that the building, road, highway or structure that is made out of this new cement can absorb solar energy from the morning and emit it during the night for around 12 hours.
