Till today we all believed that the surrounding situations in life makes people gay, a lifestyle by choice. However, a new study suggests that people are gay by birth rather than just a choice of different lifestyle. Research led by Dr. Alan R. Sanders from NorthShore Research Institute in Evanston, Illinois, has discovered a gay gene (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that supports this notion.
Researchers closely observed more than 400 pairs of gay brothers including twins and 384 families over a time span of five years for the study. They took blood samples and saliva samples and analysed them for the research. What they found was mind boggling, the results strictly pointed towards a gene (SNPs) that is responsible for people becoming gay. The research confirmed the suspected region on X chromosome, called Xq28, indicative of male homosexuality.
This is not the only study conducted over origination of gay. 20 years ago, Dean Hamer National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, US, also found evidence of a gay gene. However, his study was overlooked by the critics as his study did not provided enough evidence to get accepted by the scientists. However, this time the discovery got confirmed as Sanders study was based on more solid grounds, used ten times more volunteers than Hamer and provided enough evidences.
The study was welcomed by the gay community with open arms; even many scientists and doctors were pleased by the results.
Andrea Camperio Ciani of the University of Padua in Italy, said, “The most pleasing aspect is that the confirmation comes from a team that was in the past somewhat sceptical and critical of the earlier findings.”
Neuroscientist, Simon LeVay, who previously claimed to have found a region in the brain to be smaller in gay men. He said that “This study knocks another nail into the coffin of the ‘chosen lifestyle’ theory of homosexuality,” adding “Yes, we have a choice in life, to be ourselves or to conform to someone else’s idea of normality, but being straight, bisexual or gay, or none of these, is a central part of who we are, thanks in part to the DNA we were born with.”
In recent years, gay community have emerged in large numbers, and they are fighting for their rights. Several campaigns have been launched; cases are pending in the Courts waiting for their application to get approved. Recently in 11 states in US itself legalized gay marriages.
Several Big Guns including Apple Inc. CEO Tim Cook and pop king Michael Jackson accepted of being gay. Tim openly said that he is proud of being gay and has supported gay campaigns. Perhaps, if we follow the study, Tim Cook is a gay by birth and not by choice.
However, people still are very orthodox when it comes to homosexual marriages. They believe that poor upbringing of a child and adverse condition in one’s life might be a possible reason for becoming gay. On a contrary note, the study unveiled something else that might change the perception of people towards gay or lesbians.
The results of the study were published in Psychological Medicine last Monday.
