Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand and Tanvir Jafri, son of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri have been accused of the fund larceny committed by them in which they took money as donation from people that was meant for a museum for the 2002 Gujrat riots’ victims.
They have been accused of convicting the felony of Rs. 1 crore and misappropriation of these funds for personal benefits. Recently, their judges for the hearing also switched places without producing a recuse.
Judge Justices Mukhopadhaya and Ramana were the replacements, and they have been alleged to have close connections with PM Modi as he has attended their children’s marriage. PM Modi is also against Teesta Setalvad as she was the one who exposed him during the 2002 Gujrat riots.
Although the benches have said that they will not be biased towards a particular person but since there is no evidence of recuse, and the mysterious change of judges may have meant something else for this larceny case.
The good news for Teesta is that, she and her husband have been granted anticipatory bail but on the terms that they will fully co-operate with the police in finding the real culprits else they will be thrown back to the jail.
Influential people like Kapil Sibal have come out and said, “If she is arrested and sent to jail, the voice of dissent against the might of a state will be lost. She is ready to face investigation. This is a fit case for grant of anticipatory bail. Please don’t allow Gujarat Police to arrest her.”
Even though there are various twists and turns in the fund larceny case, the only hope for Teesta is that the judges should either be unbiased with their relationships or the case be passed to another bench for consideration.
