Lalit Modi invoked UK royals while seeking travel papers: Report

According to the media report by The Sunday Times, Lalit Modi had invoked the names of Britain’s royal family while he sought British travel papers.

He had known The Duke of York and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and had met in London just days before his travel papers were granted.

Lalit Modi claimed that the matter was discussed with Prince Charles as well Though Buckingham palace has refused to elaborate on the discussion between Prince Andrew and Modi but also denied categorically that the Duke of York had lobbied the government for Modi.

Earlier it was also reported that Vaz had intervened with the head of Britain’s immigration service in favor of Modi. Modi faces 16 Enforcement Directorate cases and is now a big issue for BJP since BJP’s leader Sushma Swaraj’s name has come up. Allegedly, Sushma had helped him obtain travel documents for Britain to fly to Portugal.

Now, Sushma is being forced by the opposition to quit whereas she is calling her steps as stone on Humanitarian ground.

Vaz had written to the director general of UK visas and immigration seeking the travel papers of Modi, according to the former IPL chief. Vaz had raised the same issue later with another Home office official.
Later, on July 21 Prince Andrew was also seen giving a visit to Modi at his seven-storey townhouse in Chelsea.

Spokesperson from Buckingham palace has refused to comment anything on Modi’s personal equation and private meetings with the members of royal family but agreed that Modi had known the Duke of York for many years.

Guarding Prince Andrew, the spokesperson said that Andrew did not have the knowledge of allegations against Modi and moreover there are not any details of any gifts accepted by Andrew from Modi.

Modi had moved to London in 2010 when he was charged with match-fixing and illegal betting in IPL.
