Entrepreneur Shibaji Panja, who is also Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s right-hand man has been detained at the NSC Bose International Airport by a Delhi police team for committing larceny. Panja had been accused of committing a fraud of Rs 18 crore by taking loan from Industrial Financial Corporation, a government organisation which lends short-term loans to firms.
He got the loan sanctioned after submitting some fake documents to the Corporation. He had been accompanying Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her three-day Bangladesh visit. Panja will be brought to Delhi for further questioning on his fraud case. A lookout notice was issued on 19 February and now when he landed on Indian soil, he was detained in Kolkata.
In a not so surprising event of a politician’s comment, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee switched statements and said that Panja is a businessman and what he does or doesn’t, does not signify or be related to her. “There can be a case against a businessman that is his (Panja’s) matter. This is not related to me,” Banerjee said.
This incident has given the opposition party an advantage to slam CM Banerjee and has been going around saying that Banerjee has brought shame upon the country by making him a part of the delegation during Bangladesh-India relations meet.
Panja is also known for co-producing the film Byomkesh Bakshi in 2010, which was a fictional detective in Bengali literature created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay and allegedly inspired by Sherlock Holmes.
With Mamata Banerjee’s support gone, Panja might be facing some serious trouble in trying to prove his innocence. But this only proves that Modi government is doing some work for the nation by bringing out the bad out, even it means those bad which are not a part of Modi’s inner circle and maybe “Ache Din” have actually arrived.
