Laboratory results are awaited in two more state- Jharkhand and Gujarat and decision is expected by Thursday.
The Maggi debate has also roped in Bollywood stars and it sparked off after the food safety inspectors in Uttar Pradesh discovered high levels of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead, 17 times above the permissible limit.
Excess intake of Lead impacts the kidneys, bones and nervous system negatively . while MSG damages the nervous system on a long run.
Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachan, Preity Zinta and Madhuri Dixit have been dragged in for promoting the brand and misleading the people.
Maggi stocks in Army have also been set aside and an advisory issued by the Indian Army has asked its personnel not to consume it. This covers 13 lakh personnel and 1000 army canteens. After the ban of Maggi in Delhi, the shares of Nestle India dropped by 9% in BSE.
The company, however, said that they haven’t received any order to recall Maggi products in the market except an order from UP which pertained to Noodles whose last before date had already reached.
Additional Secretary in Food and Consumers Affairs, G Gurucharan said that the samples are being tested across the country and results are awaited, He added that the regulatory action was taken in Delhi after the results were obtained and showed higher than permissible level of lead.
The Union Health Ministry will also investigate and work on the issue. Maggi sale has already been banned in Big Bazar retail stores.
Big Bazar spokesperson said that the Maggi has been taken off the shelf for public interest and it will be kept so until further orders from authorities.
