With the death of four more people, the death toll in Mumbai due to the consumption of spurious liquor reached 96 while 38 people are still under treatment. The incident of deaths due to liquor took place at Laxmi Nagar slum near Gamdevi Jurassic Park in Malad.
Since December 2005 when 87 people were reported to have lost their lives due to the consumption of spurious liquor, this is the worst tragedy in the city. However, this also indicates towards the stand stilled situation.
Five accused have been arrested in the case but the prime accused is still free. Mainka Bai is the prime accused and still on run. After the incident took place, eight persons attached to Malwani police and four officials from Excise department have been suspended. The state Excise Department Commissioner Shyamsundar Shinde said that the step has been taken because of the dereliction of their duty by those officials.
Mumbai Police on the other hand is on lookout for the other people who might have consumed liquor that day. A police official informed that they are interrogating all the houses in the vicinity to ask if any other person had taken the spurious liquor so that they can be sent to the hospital. Eight such people have already been reported.
In the last one year, 117 cases of distribution of hooch liquor have been registered by the Excise department. Yesterday only, 40 lts of illicit liquor was raided by Antop Hill Police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Zone 4, Ashok Dudhe said that they had the information of illicit liquor being sold in Sion- Koliwada area so the police raided and seized it.
Dudhe also said that all the DCps have been instructed by Commissioner Rakesh Maria to crack down all the illicit liquor shops.
