To demonstrate the role  of multiple senses, researchers from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) conducted a test in which they used different sets of sounds and lights in various combinations and asked all 384 participants aged between 18 and 22. who were part of the study, to identify where the light and sound originated.

While explaining the experiment, researchers said that the participants were asked to sit facing a black screen. Five speakers were kept behind the screen while a projector was wall mounted such that it could throw flashes at the spot on the screen where the speakers were located. Now researchers switched on the light and sounds simultaneously and one by one. Participants were asked to find the location from where sound or light were originated.

The study highlights the fact that our brain has developed a habit of using information from multiple senses even for doing a single small task. Although researchers knew how brain works but no study was conducted yet to confirm the spatial performance of the brain. This is the first study that confirms the brain’s ability of spatial localisation.

“The brain is wired to use information from multiple senses to correct other senses. The saying is true – ‘If you want to hear better, put your glasses on’,” said Ladan Shams, a professor at UCLA.“Our basic sensory representation of the world u2014 how information from our eyes and ears is processed by neurons in the brain u2014 is inaccurate,” she added.

The study was published in the journal PLOS Computational Biology.
