Sprout Pharmaceuticals soon to launch 'Female Viagra'

After decade-long efforts from the drug industry female viagra is soon to become reality. According to reports, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recommended approval for the drug that boosts sexual desire of women. However, the recommendation came with a clause that says, the company should make a strategy to counter the risks and side effects associated with the drug.

A bench of 24 members from FDA voted for the cause, and 18 voted in favor while 6 voted against the drug. Commonly called as female viagra, the drug is being developed by Sprout Pharmaceuticals. An official from the company said in a statement that it is a big victory since their company had been rejected by FDA twice in the past (2010 and 2013) due to safety issues. However, company official also added that the company had confidence in the drug and that’s why it tried aggressively despite getting rejected.

Although recommendation for approval has been made but official confirmation will be made in August. While talking of flibanserin (A drug that may be used to treat decreased libido in women) FDA experts said that although the effect of drug is less but we need to address the sexual problems and desire in women.

Dr. Julia Heiman of the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University said that the drug has shown modest results but even modest results can enlighten someone’s life at a certain point.

In the 24 week trials conducted by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, it was found that 46 to 60 percent of women were benefitted from the treatment while its critics suggest that the only 10 percent of the women were actually benefitted.

Moreover, critics of Sprout are saying that the drug is very dangerous to health and the company has enough money to buy the FDA officials to give a nod. Some labeled the drug as premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder.
