Are you in Love or not, still in doubt? Scientists from the University of China and New York have developed a test that can tell whether a person is in love or not. Researchers claim that by examining the brain through MRI scan they obtain the empirical evidence of love-related alterations in the brain.

In the study researchers found that a person in love has increased activity in certain parts of brain including part responsible for motivation and reward feeling, suggests that a person is in love.

“Our study provides the first evidence of love-related alterations in the underlying architecture of the brain and the results shed new light on the mechanisms of romantic love,” said lead researcher Professor Xiaochu Zhang from the University of Science and Technology in China.

For the study, researchers involved 100 men and women participants. Some of participants were in intense love while some never had been in love, some of the participants recently broke up. Chinese scientists instructed all the participants not to think of anything while they took MRI scan of their brain.

After analysing the data, the study authors found that people those who are in love showed increased activity in certain regions of the brain linked with reward, motivation, emotion regulation and in social cognition network.

People who recently ended their relation and the people who had never been in love before showed lesser activity in these parts of brains. Researchers used these results to tell whether a person is in love or not.

“It suggest that when someone fall into the love, their brain works in a different way in many types of behaviours besides the love-related during daily life,” the team said.

The study can be used several lawsuits including divorce, criminal cases including passion and love, etc.

The study appeared in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
