Recently, at least 16 patients suffered partial eye vision loss due to botched eye surgeries in Ambala. Strongly reacting on the case, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has set up a three-member panel that will look into the case. In addition, a case has been booked by the district police against Dr Charanjit Singh of charitable society ‘Sarv Kalyan Sewarth Samithi’.
Dr Charanjit had conducted cataract surgeries at the Ambala cantonment’s congested Mahesh Nagar locality on November 24 and charged Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000 from each of the patients. Botched eye surgeries case got into government’s notice after 15 patients who had the cataract removal surgery later suffered eye infections and were admitted to Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) last week.
Dr VK Gupta, a civil surgeon in Ambala has filed the case at Mahesh Nagar police station where the police have registered the case under Sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code. However, the accused Dr Charanjit who conducted the surgeries has not been arrested yet.
According to the police, while searching the hospital they have found large stocks of medicines especially eye drops that have past their expiry dates which clearly points toward the careless attitude of hospital management. In addition, Gupta alleged that Charanjit and his team did not have the permission to hold charitable eye camp and unhygienic conditions and careless attitude of the management is definitely a punishable affair.
Moreover, it was reported that 11 patients have been treated completely at the PGIMER and one is still in critical condition whose chances of vision recovery is very slim.
CM Khattar has reacted strongly on the matter and attacked opposition parties, alleging that instead of taking up matters of public interests, they come unprepared to create nuisance.Tags: ambala, botched eye surgery, eye, Haryana, Manohar lal khattar
