Jolla Tablet - The TeCake

After getting collaborated with Intex Technologies, Jolla, a Finland-based company has revealed that its Jolla Tablet is up for preorders now in selected countries, including India, EU, Norway, Switzerland, USA, China, Hong Kong, and Russia. The company has futher announced that the consignment is quite “limited” and now available to pre-order at its official web portal with a price tag of €267 (~ Rs. 19,822) for the 32GB variant, meanwhile, the 64GB variant has been priced at €299 (~Rs. 22,198).

According to Wikipedia, the Jolla Tablet is the first crowdsourced tablet, designed by Jolla Oy running the company’s GNU/Linux Sailfish OS distribution, announced on 19 November 2014.

On the same day, Jolla has started indiegogo.com a crowdfunding campaign to fundraise 380,000 USD, needed to release the device, with an offer to preorder devices at a discount if the goal would be achieved. The first lot of 1000 tablets, at the price of 189 USD, sold out within three hours of the campaign’s opening. In the mean time, within less than 24 hours the campaign managed to reach 249% of the goal, 1,089,378 USD from 6,848 users.

The prototype of the tablet was first showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2015, held in March. It was running on the Sailfish OS 2.0. The Sailfish is at its core derivative of Meego, which was a Nokia OS and eventually abandoned for the Windows Phone. The team further revealed that the new OS will support most of the Android applications (.apk). Sailfish OS is an open source general-purpose Linux operating system, widely known as a mobile operating system combining the Linux kernel for a particular hardware platform use.

On the specification front, the Sailfish OS 2.0 running on the Jolla tablet is powered by a 1.8 GHz 64-bit Quad Core Intel Atom Baytrail processor that is coupled with  a 2GB DDR3L-RS RAM, which is a low-power consuming memory currently being used in latest Notebook PCs for high performance in low power dissipation. The internal storage capacity can be expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card.

The device is fronted with a 7.85-inch IPS Capacitive Touchscreen with 5 points multi-touch and a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels and 330 ppi of pixel density and a 2 megapixel of user-facing camera above it. Meanwhile, the tablet boasts a 5 megapixel of primary image capturing tool at the back, which is capable of full HD 1080p video recording.

In terms of connectivity, the Jolla Tablet comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n dual-band, Bluetooth 3.0, A-GPS/GLONASS, Micro-USB OTG Support and a 3.5mm audio jack. The device also features an Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Hall Sensor, Light Sensor and a Compass and fueld with a 4450 mAh of battery.
